Find other parents to discuss the parenting issues you care about. Find ways to support each other.
Introduce your kids to new people, ideas, and places to expand their world.
Encourage your kids to ask questions about life, death, and other spiritual issues.
Place parental controls on what your kids can access through the Internet and on cable.
Tell your kids the truth—even when it isn’t easy. They don’t need to know all the details, but they need you to be honest.
Find positive role models for your kids. They’re in your community, your kids’ school, and at your work place.
Exercise together as a family. Go for family walks. Swim at a community pool. Play games.
Give kids a second chance (and a third and a fourth) when they make mistakes.
When you see news that goes against your values, talk about that with your kids. Help them learn from other people’s mistakes.
Advocate that your community become an asset-building community.
