By: Jolene Roehlkepartain

The school countdown is on, and the summer break is quickly evaporating. How is your family enjoying the last bit of summer before school starts? Consider these ideas: Read more >

1. Enjoy a concert or movie in a park. Many communities offer these for free.

2. Grab a camera and take pictures in your neighborhood, at a local park, at a local zoo, or at a nature center. Make a photo album together.

3. Blow bubbles. See how can blow the biggest bubble, the most bubbles in one blow, or the highest bubble.

4. Have a snack picnic. Pack a snack treat to have at a park or playground for the middle of the afternoon.

5. Make a fort in your yard. Use beach towels and a clothesline.

6. Eat watermelon or homemade popsicles outside.

7. Stay up late and look for constellations on a clear night.

8. Go hunting for birds. Check out a book from your library about local birds (or birds that live in your state). Then see how many you can find.

9. Take your dog for a walk on a different path. If you don’t have a dog, see if your neighbor will let you walk a dog.

10. Have a water balloon fight.

11. Look for bugs. If you live in an area that has lightning bugs, catch them after dark with a jar that has a lid with holes in it.

12. Eat fresh fruit that you buy at a farmer’s market or a roadside food stand.

13. Watch the sun set together. Or get up early and watch the sun rise.

14. Go camping in the backyard. Borrow a pup tent from a friend if you don’t have one.

15. Take a walk together after dark in a safe area of your community.

16. Read a book outside. Consider Tops & Bottoms by Janet Stevens (about a garden snafu) or My Life as a Chicken by Ellen A. Kelley (a great outdoor adventure).

17. Go to a farm where you can pick apples, strawberries, or some other type of fruit.

18. Have an outdoor puppet show or theater production.

19. Play Tag; Kick the Can; or Green Light, Red Light.

20. Draw pictures with chalk on a sidewalk or driveway. Leave messages for friends on their sidewalks.

21. Do something good for someone else. Bake cookies or cookie bars. Drop them off and wish them a happy day. Get more ideas here.

22. Go to the beach and build a long trench that holds water. Float bath toys along the waterway.

23. If your state has a state fair or a Renaissance Festival, visit on family day when the entrance fees are cheaper.

24. Cook with your family. Make some type of frozen dessert.

25. Do something again that your family really enjoys doing together, such as going to the playground, taking a family bike ride, going swimming, or taking a walk.

Enjoy these last few days of summer until school starts. Once school begins, your life may change drastically. Although you will still be able to enjoy some of the summer-like temperatures for a while, school will take precedence. So make the most of the last days of summer by doing what your family enjoys most.
