With our lives being pulled in so many directions, it's easy to overlook potential health effects that the daily use (and overuse) of our lifelines gadgets can cause. Spending a good portion of our days staring at a screen has become a lifestyle that is leading to a slew of vision problems across America. That's why we're giving away this handy iPhone App to 10 lucky ParentFurther blog readers. The EyeCare Save Your Vision Application is an easy way to remind yourself to give your eyes a break from the screen.

Save your vision by taking frequent breaks to help rest your eyes * Improve your eye health with EyeCare * Screen overuse or misuse can result in eye strain, dry eyes, headaches, fatigue, blurred vision or loss of focus. The American Optometric Association encourages tech users to follow the 20-20-20 rule: at least every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. EyeCare helps you to do this:
1. Start EyeCare before you begin using your computer at home or work.
2. Set the number of minutes between each rest, e.g. take an eye break every 20 minutes. 3. Tap Start. Now you can turn off your iDevice or exit EyeCare.
4. EyeCare works in the background and periodically alerts you to take eye breaks.
Remember to look away from your screen during the breaks!
With EyeCare and discipline, you can prevent Computer Vision Syndrome and have healthy vision.

Looks cool. At least a little more unobtrusive than setting the alarm to go off every 20 minutes. I just got my iphone 4 unlocked and I would like to give this app a try.

I know that children are only supposed to watch TV for an hour or so a day, however I am guilty of letting my children watch Tv for much more than that. Between trying to keep the house clean the laundry done , cooking three meals a day its very hard not to let the TV do a little babysitting. My children are six, four and three. In addition to needing them busy while I am busy, It’s also expensive to take my kids anywhere, they always want to but something the minute we leave the house.

So basically I would love to hear some ideas on how to keep children busy, happy and not addicted to TV. I play games with them, we color, we sing and dance. Any other ideas would be great.

I would like to see this site address and cover the sensitive subject of depression and suicide as it applies to young people between the ages of 10 and 20 years. My son came home from school one day in his third grade year of elementary school and shared with me that the subject that was covered in his humanities class that day was depression and suicide. Apparantly suicide was explained as an alternative lifestyle as he understood the teacher to say, and even at his very tender age of eight years, he thought that was a dangerous thing to be taught, and I wholeheartedly agreed with him. I called the school board and made my comments of complaint that at the impressionalble age the third grade class was at, I considered it criminal to influence a child to understand that taking ones own life was any sort of vialble alternative to whatever was happening in ones life and I wished the curriculum to be changed to discover another way to teach children about such sensitive issues.

The subject matter is always intelligently and sensitively handled with a lot of obvious research having been applied to each resulting post. So if you can consider covering the requested subject I would be greatly relieved and it will be much appreciated, and my son and daughters will all be interested in what you would have to share. Children are very intelligent people and they are very involved in each other’s lives at school and church and when a suicide happens to someone they know, it is very confusing and discouraging for them much worse than it is for us as adults. I was horrified at learning the news my small son shared with me about what was taught at his school and I was angry also. Who in there right mind would teach anyone, let alone a child, that if you don’t like or have a way to change your current life, an accetable alternative is suicide?!!! Thank you in advance and I really appreciate this site and all of you.
