Be Better at 'Being There' for Your Kids: 4 Tips for Busy, Single Moms

By: Guest Blogger, Raquel Masco

With all we do as single moms (And all moms for that matter!), it's a juggling act to fit everything in while maintaining balance in our lives. In my case, it hasn't always been easy, but I've learned some things over the past 16 years as a single mother, and I'm honored to be able to share a few with you. So take heart! Even though it's a juggling act, you don't have to be a pro magician to make these tips work.

Tip#1: Make Time for "Me" Time. Yes, I know it sounds selfish, but when I set aside an hour every morning to "just be" (no work), I'm more relaxed and I want to make the time for my son.

Tip#2: Be Okay with Saying No. As women, we tend to think we have to be everything to everyone. We don't. Say no to those activities that are not urgent. The show will go on without you, and you will go on without the show. Your kids will feel like the priority you're making them.

Tip#3: Make the most of the "in-between" moments. I like to make the most of the time I spend in the car driving my kids to school, or the time spent at home before dinner or church. My son and I talk about anything and everything. We sing and dance along to the radio, and we simply enjoy each other's company. Learn to recognize your own "in-between" moments!

Tip#4: Set aside a Saturday (or any day) on the calendar for "Tre Day". Actually, Tre is my son, so you'll have to insert your own child's name above--or call it whatever you want! The important thing is to have fun together. Setting aside a whole day to just hangout, go to museums, the movies, or the park is a wonderful bonding experience that isn't at all rushed.

So there you have it! You can do this. You CAN have a career and be a loving, present mom in the lives of your children.

Wishing you all the best,

Love It!!!!! As a single Mommy of 5 I can’t agree More. You Summed it all of. My fave is the “in-between” moments. Some days I am in the vehicle from 5pm until 9pm dropping off and picking up. It all Counts!!!!
